Cranberries 101

When selecting Cranberries, be sure to choose berries that are deep red in color and plump in size. Look for berries that are firm to the touch and do not have any cuts, cracks or bruises. Fresh cranberries can be stored for up to three weeks in a refrigerator and are great for freezing. Avoid washing cranberries when first storing them, only wash before serving.

Interesting Fact: The cranberry is native to North America and was enjoyed by American Indians cooked and sweetened with honey or maple syrup; a recipe which was likely served at the first New England Thanksgiving celebrations. The cranberry belongs to the same genus as the blueberry. Cranberries have also been referred to as “bounceberries” because a sign of ripeness is a bouncy berry.
