National better breakfast month – celebrate with berries!

September is National Better Breakfast Month! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it provides important vitamins and minerals that your body needs to start the day. The word breakfast refers to “breaking your fast”, because the time lapse between dinner and breakfast is the longest when compared to other meals. On average, a person sleeps 8 hours but during those hours the body does not receive food or water. So when you wake up, your body is lacking the nutrients that provide energy! A healthy breakfast has been shown to have many health benefits; it can help with weight control, increase energy and improve memory. It also curbs your hunger to help avoid carbs throughout the day, ultimately keeping your appetite under control.

The basics of a healthy breakfast

  • – Whole grains
  • – Low-fat proteins
  • – Low-fat dairy
  • – Fruits and vegetables
